A Ghanaian social media influencer has been extradited to the United States to face trial over allegations of masterminding an $8 million romance scam that targeted elderly Americans.
Frederick Kumi, popularly known online as Abu Trica, is accused by U.S. prosecutors of using artificial intelligence to create fake online identities and deceive victims through social media and dating platforms. Authorities allege the scheme manipulated elderly individuals into sending millions of dollars under false pretenses, including medical emergencies, travel expenses, and investment opportunities.
Kumi, who denies all charges, was extradited from Ghana after months of legal proceedings. If convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, he faces up to 20 years in prison under U.S. law.
The case is part of a broader U.S. crackdown on international fraud networks targeting elderly victims and highlights growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence in sophisticated online scams.
