Artificial intelligence is creating new employment opportunities across Britain, with more than half of UK businesses saying the technology has contributed to job creation, according to new research from Lloyds.
The Lloyds Business Barometer found that 54% of UK businesses reported that AI had created new jobs within their organisations. The findings highlight a changing employment landscape as companies increasingly integrate artificial intelligence into their operations.
The survey also found that businesses are placing greater emphasis on AI-related skills when recruiting. Around a quarter of firms said they are increasingly looking for candidates with AI capabilities, while about one in five businesses reported creating roles specifically focused on AI.
At the same time, companies are preparing their existing workforces for the rapid development of the technology. Around 58% of businesses said they plan to increase investment in AI skills and training over the next year.
The findings challenge concerns that artificial intelligence will only eliminate jobs. While AI is expected to automate some tasks and change the nature of existing roles, businesses are also identifying new opportunities linked to technology, data, digital transformation and AI management.
However, the impact of AI remains mixed. Other research has found that automation can allow companies to increase productivity without increasing employment, while some businesses may reduce staffing requirements as AI becomes more capable.
The latest figures suggest that the UK labour market is entering a period of significant transformation. Employers are increasingly seeking workers who can combine technical AI knowledge with human skills such as judgement, creativity and communication.
As adoption accelerates, businesses are expected to continue investing in training and recruitment to ensure their employees can work effectively alongside increasingly advanced AI systems.
