Medical experts are taking the stand in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, offering testimony about the hallucinations and severe mental illness that her defense says contributed to the deaths of her three children in January 2023.

Clancy, 36, is accused of killing her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan, at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with her defense arguing that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible for her actions.

Forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel testified that Clancy suffered from bipolar disorder and a rare form of postpartum psychosis. He said she experienced delusional thoughts and auditory hallucinations and maintained that she was not faking her symptoms.

According to testimony, Clancy told her husband after the killings that she had heard a male voice instructing her to kill her children and herself. The defense says the account supports its argument that she was experiencing a break from reality at the time of the killings.

The prosecution has challenged the defense’s interpretation, questioning Clancy’s diagnosis and pointing to evidence it says demonstrates planning and awareness of her actions. Prosecutors have also highlighted her online searches involving hallucinations, psychosis, suicide and psychiatric medications.

The jury has already heard extensive testimony about Clancy’s deteriorating mental health, medication history and efforts to seek treatment before the deaths. Family members have described increasing paranoia, distress and concerns about her mental state.

The central question for jurors is whether Clancy was legally responsible for the killings or whether severe mental illness prevented her from understanding the wrongfulness of her actions.

The trial remains ongoing, with additional defense witnesses expected to testify.
