In a major move aimed at transforming public transportation and promoting environmentally friendly travel, the Punjab government has announced the expansion of its electric bus service to 10 additional cities across the province. The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader plan to modernize urban transport, reduce pollution, and provide affordable travel facilities to citizens.
According to the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department, the new electric buses will soon begin operations in Attock, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Layyah, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, and Okara. The decision was approved under the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of green and sustainable transport systems across Punjab.
Officials said the electric buses are designed to provide modern travel facilities to the public while significantly reducing carbon emissions and fuel costs. The buses will feature air-conditioning, comfortable seating, GPS tracking systems, and dedicated spaces for women and differently-abled passengers. Authorities believe the initiative will help ease traffic congestion and improve the daily commuting experience for thousands of residents.
The Punjab government had earlier launched electric bus services in several major cities, including Lahore and Rawalpindi, where the project received a positive response from commuters. Following the success of the initial phase, the provincial administration decided to extend the service to more districts to ensure equal access to modern transportation facilities.
Transport officials revealed that charging stations and supporting infrastructure are also being developed alongside the expansion project to ensure uninterrupted operations. The government is reportedly working with international and local partners to strengthen Punjab’s public transport network through clean energy solutions.
Speaking about the initiative, officials said the project reflects Punjab’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges and adopting sustainable urban mobility solutions. They added that electric buses are expected to lower operational costs in the long run and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Citizens in the newly included cities have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the modern bus system will improve connectivity, reduce travel expenses, and provide safer transport options. Many commuters also praised the government’s efforts to introduce eco-friendly technology into the public transport sector.
The Punjab government has indicated that more cities could be included in future phases of the project as authorities continue to expand green transportation initiatives throughout the province.
