New Zealand defeated Pakistan 4-2 in the Hockey World Cup 2026 classification match, ending Pakistan’s hopes of finishing ninth in the tournament.

The Black Sticks made a flying start, scoring just 20 seconds into the match through Dylan Thomas. Pakistan struggled to cope with New Zealand’s early pressure, and Scott Boyde doubled the lead in the 16th minute.

George Baker then extended New Zealand’s advantage in the 22nd minute, leaving Pakistan 3-0 down at halftime.

Pakistan responded strongly after the break and staged an impressive fightback. Sufyan Khan reduced the deficit in the 33rd minute before Afraz scored five minutes later to make it 3-2.

With momentum shifting toward Pakistan, New Zealand remained composed and eventually restored its two-goal advantage. Kane Russell converted a penalty corner in the 49th minute to put the Black Sticks 4-2 ahead.

Pakistan pushed hard in the final stages but could not find another goal, as New Zealand secured a convincing victory.

The defeat means Pakistan will now face South Africa in the 11th/12th-place classification match. New Zealand, meanwhile, will play Ireland for ninth place.

Pakistan had entered the classification stage after beating Japan 4-3, a victory that ended a 16-year wait for a World Cup win. However, losses to England and India, along with a draw against Wales, prevented the Green Shirts from progressing further.

The latest defeat will be a disappointing result for Pakistan, who will now look to finish their World Cup campaign on a positive note against South Africa.
