Israel Plans Permanent Occupation of Gaza as Displacement Concerns Grow

Israel is moving toward a long-term military presence and expanded control over parts of the Gaza Strip, while senior officials are pursuing plans that could dramatically reshape the territory’s future.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said Israel is preparing for the possible removal of much of Gaza’s Palestinian population, with plans reportedly examining ways to facilitate departures by sea, air and other routes. Katz has also indicated that Israel is seeking support from U.S. President Donald Trump for the controversial initiative.

The developments have intensified international concerns that Israel could seek permanent control over Gaza rather than a temporary military deployment. The United Nations human rights office has previously warned that Israeli policies and official statements indicate an apparent intent to establish permanent control over the territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has continued to insist that Israeli forces will remain in areas of Gaza where they are operating until Hamas is disarmed and the territory is demilitarized. His position has fueled concerns that an Israeli military presence could continue for an extended period.

The issue has also become increasingly prominent inside Israel. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has previously called for the military to prepare for the “full occupation” of Gaza and advocated rebuilding Israeli settlements in the territory.

Palestinian officials and international rights advocates have warned that forced displacement of civilians would raise grave humanitarian and legal concerns. Any large-scale removal of Gaza’s population could trigger renewed international pressure on Israel and its allies.

With Gaza already facing a devastating humanitarian crisis, the prospect of prolonged Israeli control and mass displacement threatens to further complicate efforts toward a political settlement and a viable post-war governing arrangement.
