U.S. President Donald Trump has sought to reassure Israelis amid a fresh escalation between the United States and Iran, saying Israel should not be concerned about the latest tensions and promising that Washington will protect its ally.
“Israel should not worry. You know why? Because I’m the president and I will take care of Israel,” Trump told Israel’s Kan public broadcaster in a phone interview, according to reports.
Trump’s comments came after the United States and Iran exchanged some of their most intense attacks since July. U.S. forces recently struck Iranian military and maritime targets near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, while Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks against U.S. forces and regional allies.
The renewed fighting has raised concerns across the Middle East about the possibility of a wider regional conflict. Israel has remained closely involved in the broader confrontation with Iran, while Iranian officials have repeatedly threatened further retaliation against U.S. and Israeli interests.
Despite the escalation, Trump has said the renewed U.S. military campaign against Iran will not continue indefinitely. However, his administration has also indicated that Washington remains prepared to conduct additional strikes if Tehran continues attacking American forces or threatens shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major flashpoint in the conflict because it is a crucial route for global energy shipments. Disruptions there have already contributed to higher oil prices and increased concerns about the impact of the conflict on the global economy.
Trump’s reassurance is likely to be closely watched in Israel as fighting continues and uncertainty grows over whether the latest escalation will develop into a prolonged regional war or eventually lead to renewed diplomatic efforts.
