U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for official use within the United States, marking a dramatic new chapter in the growing trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa. The move comes just days after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed, leading to a sharp escalation in political and economic tensions.
The executive order directs U.S. federal agencies, including the Interior Department, to update official government records and maps to reflect the new name. However, the order applies only within the United States and has no legal effect in Canada or internationally. Canadian authorities have made it clear they will continue using the historic name, Lake Ontario.
Trump defended the decision as part of his broader “America First” agenda, arguing that Canada has taken advantage of the United States in trade for years. The symbolic renaming follows Washington’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, prompting Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs on a range of American products.
