US-Canada Trade Feud Escalates as Washington Targets Beverages, Bikes and Dairy

The trade dispute between the United States and Canada has taken another sharp turn, with Washington announcing new restrictions on Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motorcycles as tensions between the two longtime allies intensify.

The measures, announced by President Donald Trump, are scheduled to take effect on September 29, adding to tariffs already imposed on billions of dollars of Canadian goods. The latest action comes after Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs covering roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, escalating a confrontation that has increasingly spread beyond traditional tariff battles.

Washington has defended the new restrictions by pointing to what it describes as discriminatory Canadian trade practices, particularly barriers affecting U.S. agricultural and other products. The administration has also directed federal agencies to exclude Canadian products from certain government procurement contracts unless Ottawa provides comparable access for American goods

Canada, meanwhile, has shown little indication that it intends to back down. Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended Ottawa’s retaliatory measures and stressed the need for Canada to reduce its economic dependence on the United States by expanding trade with other international partners, including Europe.

The escalation raises fresh concerns for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, particularly industries deeply integrated into the North American supply chain. Analysts are also watching the dispute for signs that it could threaten the broader framework governing U.S.-Canada trade.

Despite the increasingly hostile measures, officials have indicated that communication between Washington and Ottawa continues. However, the collapse of recent trade negotiations and the introduction of fresh restrictions suggest that a quick resolution remains uncertain.

The dispute now risks becoming a prolonged economic and political confrontation between two of North America’s closest trading partners.
