Japan ramping up defence is ‘critical’ to prevent war, defence minister

Japan’s defence minister has defended the country’s ongoing military buildup, arguing that strengthening national defence capabilities is “critical” to preventing war and preserving stability in an increasingly volatile security environment.

Speaking at a security forum, the minister said Japan faces a range of growing threats in the Indo-Pacific region, including rising military activity, regional tensions, and evolving geopolitical challenges. He stressed that a stronger defence posture serves as a deterrent rather than a provocation.

According to the minister, Japan’s efforts to modernize its military are designed to ensure peace through preparedness. “The most effective way to prevent conflict is to make clear that aggression will not succeed,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a credible defence capability.

The comments come as Japan continues implementing its largest defence expansion in decades. The government has increased military spending, strengthened cooperation with allies, and invested in advanced technologies, including missile defence systems, cyber capabilities, and long-range strike options.

Officials argue that the changing security landscape requires a more proactive approach to national defence. Concerns over regional flashpoints and military developments by neighboring countries have prompted Tokyo to reassess long-standing security policies.

Critics, however, have expressed concerns that increased military spending could heighten tensions in the region. Some opposition lawmakers and activists have called for greater emphasis on diplomacy and conflict prevention measures.

Supporters of the government’s strategy maintain that deterrence and diplomacy must work together. They argue that a strong defence capability enhances Japan’s ability to contribute to regional security and support international efforts to maintain peace.

The defence minister reiterated that Japan remains committed to its pacifist principles and defensive military doctrine. However, he warned that failing to adapt to emerging threats could undermine national security.

As regional security dynamics continue to evolve, Japan’s defence policy is expected to remain a central topic in both domestic politics and international discussions.
