The government has shut down around 2,500 illegal petrol pumps across Pakistan as part of a nationwide crackdown on petroleum smuggling and the illegal sale of fuel.
Authorities have also taken action against the owners and operators of the illegal outlets, according to reports presented during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The government is tightening surveillance of the petroleum supply chain through GIS tagging of petrol pumps, GPS-based fuel transportation monitoring and an ERP tracking system.
A dedicated tracking application has also been prepared for law-enforcement agencies to monitor the movement of petroleum products and identify illegal transportation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate the crackdown on smuggling and illegal businesses, while urging faster implementation of Federal Board of Revenue reforms to strengthen tax collection and enforcement.
