Iran Plans New Exclusion Zone Near Strait of Hormuz

Iran is preparing to establish a new exclusion zone near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of further disruption to commercial shipping and global energy markets.

Iranian officials said the restricted area could extend from near the reported U.S. naval blockade line toward the Strait of Hormuz and into parts of the Persian Gulf. Tehran has not yet announced the exact boundaries or when the zone will take effect.

Officials warned that vessels entering the designated area while attempting to pass through the strait could face sanctions or other restrictions. The move comes amid rapidly escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, with military confrontations involving ships and missile attacks reported in recent days.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes. Any restrictions on navigation could have immediate consequences for international shipping, oil prices and economies that depend heavily on Gulf energy exports.

The proposed exclusion zone also raises concerns among Gulf states and international shipping companies, which could be forced to reassess routes and security measures. A prolonged disruption could increase transportation costs and place additional pressure on already volatile energy markets.

The United States has not indicated that it will recognize any Iranian exclusion zone that interferes with international navigation. Washington and Tehran remain sharply divided, while diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions face significant obstacles.

The situation remains fluid, and the potential impact will depend largely on how Iran enforces the proposed zone and how the United States and commercial shipping operators respond. Any confrontation involving vessels near the Strait of Hormuz could rapidly intensify the wider regional crisis.
