Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated as both sides launch fresh attacks in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, pushing the region closer to a wider conflict and threatening global energy supplies.

According to latest reports, U.S. forces have destroyed multiple Iranian boats and intercepted missiles and drones as part of a major military operation aimed at reopening the waterway, which Iran had effectively blocked.

The operation—dubbed “Project Freedom”—involves thousands of troops, warships, and aircraft escorting commercial vessels through the strait, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

Iran, however, has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting both military and commercial ships, warning that any unauthorized presence in the strait will be treated as a hostile act. Recent strikes have also hit regional targets, including vessels and infrastructure in Gulf countries.

Despite a fragile ceasefire reached in April, hostilities have intensified, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Iran claims control over the strait and insists ships must coordinate with its forces, while the U.S. is pushing to guarantee free navigation.

The situation is already impacting the global economy. The Strait of Hormuz handles around 20% of the world’s oil supply, and disruptions are beginning to cause shortages and price shocks worldwide.

With military activity increasing and diplomacy stalled, analysts warn the crisis could spiral into a broader regional war, with severe consequences for global trade and energy markets.
