European leaders and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney have gathered in Armenia’s capital for high-level talks dominated by growing tensions with US President Donald Trump and shifting global alliances.

The meeting, part of the European Political Community (EPC) summit, brings together dozens of countries to discuss security, economic cooperation, and regional stability amid an increasingly uncertain geopolitical climate.

Trump’s policies—including troop withdrawals from Europe, trade tariffs, and the ongoing Iran conflict—have cast a long shadow over the summit, raising concerns about the reliability of the United States as a strategic partner.

Leaders are focusing on strengthening collective security and resilience, while also addressing the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East, particularly their impact on global energy markets.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s participation marks the first time a non-European leader has joined the EPC talks, signaling closer ties between Canada and Europe as both navigate strained relations with Washington.

The summit also highlights Armenia’s growing alignment with Europe, as the country seeks to deepen ties with the European Union while gradually reducing dependence on Russia.

The gathering is being seen as a significant moment for Europe and its allies to redefine partnerships and chart a more independent path in a rapidly changing global order.
