President Asif Ali Zardari has called for a firm and responsible approach to major national issues, including the long-standing debate over the creation of new provinces in Pakistan.

The issue has once again gained political attention, with calls for greater parliamentary consultation and consensus before any decision is taken. The proposed creation of new provinces remains a sensitive matter, with political parties divided over its timing, structure and constitutional implications.

The Pakistan Peoples Party has emphasized that any decision regarding new provinces must follow constitutional procedures and be backed by broad political consensus. Party leaders have maintained that such an important national matter cannot be settled through political statements alone and requires debate in Parliament.

The debate has particularly renewed focus on the demand for a separate South Punjab province. Supporters argue that smaller provinces could improve governance, strengthen political representation and ensure more effective delivery of public services. Critics, however, caution that the issue could create further political and regional divisions if pursued without consensus.

The question of new provinces is also closely linked to resource distribution, representation in Parliament, administrative efficiency and the National Finance Commission award. Any alteration to Pakistan’s provincial boundaries would require constitutional amendments, making cooperation among major political stakeholders essential.

President Zardari’s call for a firm stance comes as political parties continue discussions over several key national challenges. The government faces pressure to address public concerns while maintaining political stability and strengthening democratic institutions.

Analysts believe the provinces debate is likely to remain a major political issue in the coming months. While supporters continue to push for administrative reforms, political leaders are expected to focus on dialogue and consensus before taking any major constitutional step.

The discussion over new provinces therefore remains not only an administrative question but also a broader test of Pakistan’s political unity, constitutional process and ability to address regional demands through democratic institutions.
