Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Moscow’s solidarity with the Iranian people as fighting between Iran and the United States intensifies, signaling continued Russian support for Tehran amid the latest escalation in the Middle East.
Putin made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The Russian leader praised what he described as Iran’s courage and resilience and said Moscow stood with the Iranian people during the ongoing crisis.
The statement comes as hostilities between Washington and Tehran have sharply escalated after a period of relative calm. The United States has carried out fresh strikes against Iranian military and strategic targets, while Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks against U.S. positions in several countries across the region.
Putin also indicated that Russia is providing Iran with necessary assistance during what he called a difficult period. Moscow has emphasized the importance of expanding humanitarian cooperation with Tehran, while the two countries continue to strengthen their broader strategic relationship.
Pezeshkian thanked Putin for Russia’s position and described the relationship between Tehran and Moscow as strategic. He said Iran and Russia could cooperate in confronting what Tehran views as unilateral U.S. pressure.
Putin’s latest comments could further underscore the growing alignment between Moscow and Tehran as the conflict threatens regional stability, energy markets and international shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices have already risen amid renewed fears of prolonged disruption.
