U.S. President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz is no longer as strategically important as it once was, pointing to the development of alternative oil routes and pipelines across the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said “a lot of alternatives” are being developed to reduce dependence on the strategic waterway, which has long served as a critical transit route for global energy supplies. He specifically highlighted new pipelines and overland transportation routes, including oil shipments moving by truck through Syria. Iran International | Iran International+1

Trump warned that Iran could ultimately find the Strait of Hormuz less useful as an economic and strategic lever if alternative routes continue to expand.

The comments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran and continuing disruptions around the waterway. The strait remains one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, although regional producers have accelerated efforts to develop routes that can move oil without passing through it. At least several major pipeline projects have been planned or discussed since the conflict intensified. CBS News

The strategic shift is already influencing regional infrastructure plans. Syria, in particular, is positioning itself as a potential overland energy corridor linking Middle Eastern producers with Mediterranean markets, potentially offering another route around the Gulf. The Washington Post

However, the Strait of Hormuz remains highly significant to major Asian energy importers. South Korea, for example, relied on the waterway for 61% of its crude oil imports in 2025, underscoring the continued risks facing countries dependent on Gulf energy supplies. Reuters

Trump’s remarks signal Washington’s growing emphasis on reducing Iran’s ability to use the waterway as leverage, while accelerating investment in alternative energy corridors across the region.
