The United States has announced the phased closure of its consulate in Peshawar, citing security concerns for diplomatic personnel and operational restructuring.
According to the US State Department, the decision has been taken to ensure the safety of staff while improving resource management. Consular and diplomatic operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now be shifted to the US Embassy in Islamabad.
Officials emphasized that despite the closure, Washington’s diplomatic engagement with Pakistan will continue through its missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, and its broader policy priorities remain unchanged.
The move comes amid ongoing security challenges in the region, which have raised concerns about the safety of foreign missions operating in northwestern Pakistan.
