microsoft cuts 4,800 jobs and shrinks xbox in significant restructure

Microsoft has announced 4,800 job cuts about 2.1% of its global workforce with Xbox bearing the biggest blow. More than 1,600 roles at Xbox are being eliminated immediately, four game studios are being spun off, and the company’s new Xbox CEO is calling it “the most significant restructure in Xbox history.”

This is a big one. Microsoft just dropped a bombshell announcement that’s sending shockwaves through the tech and gaming industries and honestly, it’s a lot to take in!

On Monday, Amy Coleman, Executive Vice President at Microsoft, sent a memo to employees confirming the sweeping cuts. Her message was blunt: the company needs to focus on areas that can deliver for customers in a “fast-changing industry.” The 4,800 roles being eliminated represent roughly 2.1% of Microsoft’s total workforce, making this one of the most significant rounds of layoffs in the company’s recent history.

Xbox is taking the hardest hit. Asha Sharma, who recently stepped into the role of Xbox CEO, confirmed that more than 1,600 positions are being cut immediately and another 1,600 reductions are set to follow. That’s a staggering number for a single division. Sharma didn’t sugarcoat it, calling these changes “the most significant restructure in Xbox history” in a note shared directly on X.

But here’s where it gets really interesting: four beloved game development studios are being spun off as part of the restructure. Compulsion Games (South of Midnight), Double Fine Productions (Psychonauts), Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs will all move outside of the Xbox organization. Crucially, both Double Fine and Compulsion will return to independent management and depart with their intellectual property intact—which is genuinely good news for fans of those studios. Double Fine, which Microsoft acquired back in 2019, posted on X that it was “thankful to everyone at Xbox for seven great years together.”

Meanwhile, Minecraft developer Mojang and Candy Crush maker King will now report directly to Sharma a clear signal about where Xbox is placing its bets. Tech analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis said this underlines Xbox’s intention to focus more heavily on its biggest intellectual property and audiences, rather than maintaining a sprawling portfolio of studios.

So what’s driving all of this? Coleman pointed to shifting customer needs and an industry evolving faster than any single company can keep up with. “Companies don’t get to choose whether their industry changes; they only get to choose whether they change with it,” she wrote. And while Coleman was careful to clarify that the lost roles won’t simply be replaced by AI, she acknowledged that “AI is changing how work gets done”—a statement that will likely raise plenty of eyebrows given Microsoft’s multi-billion-dollar AI investments.

This news lands at an already bruising time for the gaming industry. In 2024, Xbox cut more than 2,000 staff and shuttered four studios following its massive Activision-Blizzard acquisition. And just over a year ago, Microsoft announced plans to cut up to 9,000 jobs company-wide as part of its AI-focused strategy. The pattern is becoming hard to ignore.

Tech analyst Paolo Pescatore put it plainly to the BBC: “The challenge is not just cutting costs; it is defining what Xbox stands for in a world where games are moving across console, PC, cloud and subscription platforms.” That’s the real question hanging over all of this and one that Sharma and her team will need to answer convincingly in the months ahead.

Sharma herself framed the restructure as a step toward growth, not retreat. “These changes are about a bigger future for Xbox, not a smaller one,” she said. Whether the industry believes that remains to be seen.
