Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland manager following the team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his seven-year spell in charge of the national side.
The 62-year-old announced his decision shortly after Scotland failed to progress beyond the group stage, having secured one win and suffered defeats to Morocco and Brazil. Clarke said it was the right time to step aside despite recently signing a contract extension.
Appointed in 2019, Clarke transformed Scotland’s fortunes by ending a 23-year wait for qualification to a major tournament at UEFA Euro 2020, guiding the team to UEFA Euro 2024, and leading the nation to its first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1998. His tenure is widely regarded as one of the most successful in modern Scottish football.
Scotland captain Andy Robertson paid tribute to Clarke, thanking him for restoring belief in the national team and describing his legacy as one that changed Scottish football. The Scottish Football Association has begun the search for a new head coach ahead of preparations for UEFA Euro 2028, which Scotland will co-host.
