trump announces 50% tariffs on wide range of canadian imports

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports, significantly escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada.

The tariffs, announced under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, target nearly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including products such as dairy, alcoholic beverages, furniture, cement, wine, and sporting equipment. Key exports including energy, potash, fish, and critical minerals are exempt from the new measures.

The Trump administration says the tariffs are a response to what it describes as Canada’s discriminatory trade practices against U.S. goods, particularly in the automotive, dairy, and alcohol sectors. The new duties are expected to take effect on August 19, 2026, unless changes are made before then.

Canadian officials have criticized the move, warning it could further strain bilateral trade relations and lead to retaliatory measures. Economists also caution that the tariffs could increase costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.
